Lesson 3: WE ARE A CONDITIONED PEOPLE Your Family Heritage As mentioned in earlier chapters, the ability to make changes that are rewarding to myself lies only within myself. The biggest take-away here is that while the extent of influences from our close ones run deep in us, they are reversible. Ultimately, the choice still lies within us to make the change and shape ourselves. One dont, is particularly significant in our Asian context. Dont speak until youre spoken to. This inhibits many of an expressions and causes misunderstandings and a breakdown of communication skills. Environments and Institutions To the extent that man surrenders his identity and individuality to the group and becomes swallowed up in conditioned conformity to the whole, he becomes mediocre and average. This chapter is a revelation to myself. While it may be argued that this is good on a whole for society, it cannot be said of the influence on individuals. I begin to understand the root of the rat race, the daily grime that most of the world are put through daily. I must live my life in a society of compromise without being compromised. I must remain unsatisfied without being dissatisfied. Mistakes and Failures Again, we decide on we look at our own experiences including mistakes and failures. The more of such we experience, the more we grow. Again, we are conditioned by society to view them as negative experiences that we should avoid rather than relish. I realize at this point of time that being successful is about having a certain mindset. If I want to be successful, I must be able to develop this mindset of my own. https://youtube/watch?v=CEsr6XoACHs
