Lesson 3: We are a conditioned people. While reading this chapter the analogy of a Thermometer and a Thermostat comes to mind. Because thermometers measure and display the temperature of the environment, while thermostats control the temperature of the environment. Thermometers are people who conform to social norms and allow the environment - their family heritage, environments and institutions and mistakes and failures, to dictate and script their lives. Thermostats are people who decide and realise that they are able to choose for themselves the temperature they want to be in, or are influential enough to change the environment entirely. We need to choose to be a thermostat. It has been said that a successful man is someone who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others throw at him I believe many of us have had bricks thrown at us while doing door to door knocking or during telephone calls, but many have decided to use those bricks to build a firm and strong foundation. Seng Yong once told me that he thanks everybody who rejects him, because they have, in context to the quote above, given him a brick to lay his foundation. Mistakes and failures however, sometimes force people to use these bricks to put up walls rather than build foundations because fear breeds timidity. And I completely resonate with the irony of how the fear of failure can condition a man so that he actually attracts mistakes and failures, with the example of the forgotten driving license. I also believe the reverse is true, that the desire and drive for success will actually attract success. The thinking process should be driven by curiosity instead of fear. Failures are nothing but a state of mind. The book writes that man must accept his failure and that his problems cannot be sovled by another. Michael Jordan said in my career ive missed over 9000 shots, lost almost 300 games, 26 times ive been trusted to take the game winning shot and ive missed, ive failed over and over and over again in my life, and thats why i succeed , i can accept failure. I just cant accept not trying . https://youtube/watch?v=LCPgvTRftZg
