Lesson: Training with weights, especially heavier weights or higher intensity volume resistance training – you are conditioning your muscles in a very specific way (S.A.I.D.) that produces a tremendous amount of electrical activity. Even the amount of electrical activity generated at rest increases over time – and this is a major part of why and how the adaptation of “toned-looking” muscles occurs. This increased electrical activity also underlines the importance of sodium in the diet, as well as calcium – (but not in supplemental form.) Conversely, on the training side of the equation endurance activity or “steady state” aerobic activity does not produce a noticeable amount of muscle “tone” because it doesn’t demand the same kind or the same large magnitude of change in electrical impulses that happens with adaptations to resistance training.
