Lesson one: It’s a big, wide, wonderful world There is no one simple answer as to what constitutes success. Some argued that action is the principle ingredient but that alone does not guarantee success. Personality, formal education, exceptional I.Q. and favored family heritage may accompany success, but are not enough to contribute to success. What sets a successful man apart from the rest is personal motivation. For an individual with personal motivation, “he does not merely complain; he corrects. He does not deplore; he does. He does not lament, he leads.” Personal motivation has three components: abundance, opportunity and the power of choice. Abundance Anyone is capable of having personal motivation. They just need to be able to see the abundance around and within them and know how to utilize the potential which they possess. However, we often stop short due to self-imposed limitations of thought. We should take the first step out to try as we will never know what we can do until we do it. Expand your vision and allow your imagination and creativity to run wild. For your destiny is a blank canvas, waiting for you to draw on the resources around you to paint a magnificent picture. Opportunity Opportunity is everywhere. We just need to learn to look for it, recognize it and act upon it. Do not grieve over missed opportunities for when one window closes, another opens. Power of choice The power of choice is a personal right. There is no right or wrong choice but rather favourable or unfavourable consequence. With every choice we make, we learn from the consequences and grow. As Joseph Epstein says: “We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose the country of our birth. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time of our death. But within all this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live.” Life is the sum of all your choices.
