Lesson to share.. I do telephonic nursing now. Essentially this means I watch patients vital signs, ask questions related to their disease process and try to catch things before they get really bad. My goal is to keep folks out of the hospital by catching issues early in the game and heading off the big dogs. I have a patient that has been losing weight very rapidly for the last week or so. A few pounds a day. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out why. No nausea, no vomiting, appetite is okay, not great, but okay. I know I am asking all the right questions but still cant pin point it.. One of the questions I ask at least twice a week is Has your MD prescribed any new medicine? FINALLY today he mentions his Dr. gave him some new medicine samples two weeks ago to try. Major side effect of his new medicine is WEIGHT LOSS! Arrrgh.... My fault though. His Dr. did not prescribe it for him. The doc gave it to him to try and was going to prescribe it if it worked. Head**Desk ~~ repeat as needed.
