Lessons from Proverbs - Lesson 6 - “For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:6 “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel” Proverbs 1:1 There are two kinds of wisdom in our world. There is the “Wisdom of God and there is the “wisdom of the world”. In 1 Corinthians 1:21, Paul, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit, contrasted the “Wisdom of God and the “wisdonof the world. “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” In Proverbs, where our text comes from, Solomon, king of Israel, “by the inspiration of God,” spoke of the “Wisdom of God” and what comes from the “Wisdom of God”. Let us read Proverbs 2:6-9 and discover what comes from the Wisdom of God”. Proverbs 2: 6-9 “6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. 7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. 8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. 9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.” The first thing we see is that “Wisdom” comes from the LORD. He is the one who gives “Wisdom” and He gives it liberally to all who ask, “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad,” said, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5 So, we see that what Solomon and James said both agree that it is God who gives “Wisdom”. In James 1:5, he adds “giveth to all men liberally” who ask God for it. Solomon tells us that out of the LORD’S mouth comes “knowledge and understanding.” Solomon said, it is the LORD who lays up, i.e., gives sound Wisdom” for the righteous: the LORD is a “buckler” i.e., a protective shield to them that walk uprightly. Bible Study Tools Dictionary The LORD keeps the paths of judgment, and preserves the way of saints. How does the LORD keep the paths of judgment? The paths of the LORD are just and are to be followed. “ All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.” Psalm 25:10 How does the LORD preserve the way of the saints? He does so through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. “ Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.” Jude 1:1-2 “Preserved” in Jude is a “continuous preservation’ of the believer as a single, complete act, without reference to the time occupied in its accomplishment”. “Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.” Understanding comes with study, meditating, and obeying the commandments of God. In the Old Testament, the Jewish people obeyed the Law given to Moses by God, i.e., the Ten Commandments. In the New Testament, we obey the commandments of God’s only begotten Son Jesus Christ. John 14:15; 15:7-14. It is as we diligently study God’s Word that we will understand righteousness, and judgment and equity, i.e., “The state, quality, or ideal of being just, impartial, and fair.” And we will understand “every good path” for it will lead us “in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Psalm 23:1-3 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his names sake.” What do we learn from this lesson in Proverbs? We learn that the LORD is the One who gives “Wisdom”. We learn that knowledge and understanding comes from the LORD’S Wisdom. We learn that the LORD looks out for His people by giving them sound “Wisdom” and we learn that He protects us with a protective shield, a “buckler”, for walking “uprightly”, according to His commandments. We learn that the LORD keeps the “paths of judgment” and preserves “the way of the saints.” And today, God directs our “paths” through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. And as long as we believe in His Son and obey the commandments of His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, we are promised everlasting life. John 3:16-17 Therefore, let us accept the “sound wisdom” from God and walk “uprightly” in His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6-7 References: King James Version Bible Gateway - Thank you for public access to Bible verses.
