Lessons from a roller-skater. I have been roller-skating for - TopicsExpress

Lessons from a roller-skater. I have been roller-skating for about 15 years and occasionally someone will ask me to teach him or her something about how to skate. Over the years, I have learned that there are many aspects of roller-skating from which we can get some lessons about life. So the following are a few general things that I teach someone who wishes to learn and it is amazing how these tips parallel, how best to live life: 1. Learn how to stand – before a soldier learns how to march he or she, most learn how to stand at attention. Before a skater makes his or her first move, they must learn how to stand and stand steadfastly. (1 Cor. 15:58). In life, we must learn how to stand for right when all others defect. The surest foundation that anyone can stand on is the Word of God. I refer you to the last portion of the greatest sermon ever preached which is Matt. 7:24-29. It is self-explanatory, next is -- 2. The need for balance - Skating successfully requires the development of balance. Balance in skating usually comes with a small investment of time and experience on the skating floor and this small investment usually reaps pleasant dividends. There is also a great need for balance in life. They say, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” It also makes him unbalanced boy who will be unable to efficiently navigate the terrain of life successfully. Life in it’s proper amounts of work, rest (worship) and recreation will take us a long way toward handling life’s difficulties, next is -- 3. The need for direction - I personally enjoy opportunities to share skating tips on the floor, especially the basics and I often tell people that when we are learning to skate, we must look in the direction that we want to skate in. This is true in life as well. In order to move up in life, it is important to look up. Of course, this does not mean that we walk around with our eyes turned to the sky, all day, but what it does mean is that we must have a heart that is focused on the direction that we want to move in. David said, in Psalm 121:1, “I will lift mine eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD...” He clearly wanted to move up in a Godly direction so he looked in that direction. THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON THAT I HAVE LEARNED IN SKATING AND IN LIFE IS THIS NEXT ONE; AND IT IS -- 4. LEARNING HOW TO GET UP – Notice that I put this in bold because of its importance. Years ago I fell, and I mean that I fell big time, and I learned many lessons from that fall, but the biggest lesson I learned from that fall was not about why I fell or what caused me to fall. The biggest lesson I learned was how to get up. “Thank you Lord.” I had also fallen, one day, on the skating floor and a fellow skater took all of 30 seconds to teach me how to get up and I have been sharing the same lesson with fellow skaters every since that day. I cannot say enough about this one, but I will say that no matter where or why you have fallen, you can get up. There is an old song that greatly inspires me called, “That’s Life” and in it, there is a phrase that says, “Each time I find myself flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race because that’s life...”
