Lessons from the Ice Bucket Challenge The ALS Ice Bucket - TopicsExpress

Lessons from the Ice Bucket Challenge The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been one of the greatest social media marketing campaigns in the history of social media. I’m sure you have seen the explosion of videos on facebook with people dumping iced water on their head to get out of paying $100 to the ALS Charity that is raising money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease. It never ceases to amaze me how success can bring out the critics.. Since the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” has become a social media phenomena it has raised awareness for an important cause AND it has also raised now over $100 Million in donations to find a cure. After all the work done to make this a success this is what is trending now: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge a waste of clean water ALS Ice Bucket Challenge doesn’t work because people participate don’t have to pay ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Organisation tax returns show that they pay their execs very well ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is done by people who want attention ALS Ice Bucket Challenge *insert your personal opinion or criticism here* What next? The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is responsible for Global Warming? The Russian invasion? I’m not saying there isn’t any validity in the points above but here’s what I have observed: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge a waste of clean water The challenge has raised awareness on clean water and sanitation issues and has sparked awareness and a flood of donations for Charities such as Water.org co founded by Matt Damon. So is it really such a bad thing? No it is another consequential win! ALS Ice Bucket Challenge doesn’t work because people who participate don’t have to pay It has raised over $100M TO HELP FIND A CURE - enough said. ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Organisation tax returns show that they pay their execs very well This team of execs has come together and executed a well orchestrated campaign to raise over $100M in funding. How is it that a Charity is able to get talent that can pull this kind of stunt off? The pay them well. Personally I have no real issue at a surface level with execs of charities being paid well as long as they provide many, many, many multiples of the value they ask for in return with their results. As long as they are monitored by external peers and are paid based on results why not? I have seen great charities run into the ground because they didn’t invest in good talent and took on volunteers who had no idea how to run a business let alone a charity and it ended in disaster. ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is done by people who want attention Isn’t the whole point of raising awareness to get attention? I mean seriously. To attack people who get 15mins of social media fame because they wanted to help is the root of many social issues. MY TOP 3 lessons from The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: 1. For every positive there will always an equal and opposite negative. That’s just how this universe works. What matters for you is where your attention is and is it balanced or lopsided? The more balanced your perspective the easier it is to manage your emotions and life. 2. Where ever there is success on a large scale there will generally be critics. As a herd species we tend to react to others that stand out because we either see them as a threat to our own existence or an opportunity for greater leadership. Unfortunately more people see others who stand out as a threat… and typically we attack threats. If you’re going after success best be prepared for the types of attention you may attract. 3. If you want your cause or business to be a success then you must innovate ways to get people to support your cause. How can you use what ALS did to better promote your business? What the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge did exceptionally well is they enrolled others in their cause and let them do the work. That is SUPER. DARN. SMART. In my opinion that is the cheapest and fastest way to grow a business or a cause is by tapping into the efforts and networks of others. Blue skies, Kerwin
