Lest we misjudge the thought of the first Christian centuries we should remember that their outlook was on the whole by no means intellectual. Except in rare cases, of which Gregory Nazianzen is an obvious example, the Fathers of the Church do not compute the stages and measure the progress of objective revelation... What they paid greatest attention to was not the propagation of an abstract doctrine but the actual meeting of man with God, the familiarization of human nature with the divinity, the transformation of man by the action of Gods grace. -Henri De Lubac
