Let Grandpa tell you all a story. I graduated highschool in 2001, I moved out soon after at 20. My degree was $10,000. I received welfare to the tune of $520 a fortnight to do my degree. My rent was $100 a week I lived on Brunswick Street The Valley, my electricity was about $100 a year, I ate out most of the time so didnt need groceries my food bill was about $15 a day. The internet was free because my university gave a me free dial up account. I drove a small car and fuel was $1 or less a litre. Public transport was cheap, $2 to the outer suburbs. I would walk down on Tuesday night and enjoy Dollar Drinks Night, drinks were - $1. I went overseas 3 times whilst barely employed, I used to eat a $4 breakfast every morning, no lunch and a $5 meal on china town at night. I regularly saved up 5 figures from the extra work I did on top of my welfare - but sometimes Id just live on Youth Allowance so I could focus on my degree in Film, Visual Art and Music. I had a lady friend who lived in Eumundi and Id drive every weekend to hers and back, I used to wish I could live there she had a whole house for $70. Compared to today standards we lived like RICH people. RICH! But we werent I earned less than 30k up until I got my first Salaried job, she trained horses for 25k a year. I know we are being shat on, I remember only 12 years ago I was really rich, now I earn what should make a man rich but I am poorer than I was then. This really is wrong and we really need to do something about it. In particular for young people, who will never get to have the 20s I had, which were RAD.
