Let There Be No New Jamshed Dasti Startling Revelations Of Jamshed Dasti At the end of the last month, an independent MNA, Jamshed Dasti, tattled on the parliamentarians in the National Assembly on a point of order. He alleged that the parliament lodges had turned into the dens of immoral activities. His statement – girls are brought in the lodges, danced parties are arranged and liquor flows freely – did not sit well with those who are steering the business of government. His comments stirred up a real hornets’ nest and have drawn the ire of many lawmakers. Proofs To back up the charges he levelled against the parliamentarians, Dasti presented the empty bottles of wine in some TV talk shows. He also claimed that he had a secret video footage to establish the veracity of his allegations. Later Nabeel Gabol and some other politicians also backed up the charges of the MNA. Dasti’s Evidence Not Credible, Claims Frivolous The government constituted a seven-member committee to investigate the allegations of Dasti. But the committee found no evidence of depravity. Wrong Method Of Inquiry An eyewitness seizes a civil servant taking bribes in an office where every second individual indulges in such a practice and brings the culprit before the head of the department. If the head constitutes an inquiry committee, from the same department, to probe the accusation, what findings will it come up with? If the investigators want to survive, they will furnish the findings which will flatter the shady characters along with the boss. Will anyone in his or her right mind expect that the government-appointed committee will ever think of corroborating the evidence put forward by Dasti? The government’s line of inquiry reminds one of the issue of vote rigging. After the general polls, some political parties put blames for a massive electoral fraud on the ECP. The Nadra, the body for investigating the rigging claims, was put under the ECP for three months by the Interior Minister in order to probe the charges. Silencing potential whistleblowers The treatment meted out to Dasti is a clear warning to him and other lawmakers not to think of dropping a bombshell on the floor of the National Assembly; the house has as yet to decide what lies in store for the whistleblower. Thanks to the special parliamentary committee, the dude who found empty bottles of liquor now finds himself empty handed. The accused have been quitted while the complainant may be booked. Dasti claimed the lodges still reek of hashish but those with a “sound sense of smell” realized nothing of the sort.
