Let battle commence. Publicity has now been started for the new Truro Cathedral Girls Choir. I am all in favour of girls being involved with church and cathedral music making, but I am strongly against tying it in with a fee paying independent school. Elitist. Almost all of the County music staff are being made redundant due to cuts. Bands, choirs and ensembles are at risk. The Diocese of Truro is on the verge of bankruptcy. The cathedral, which once championed the cause of children from state schools being involved in music making through the Chorister outreach programme now used by a lot of cathedrals in the UK has now in effect cancelled all the good work it once did and has now signed up in partnership with a fee paying private school rather than taking children from the state system for its new girls choir. Sad isnt it. According to the Dean of Truro, the Chapter decided that this model was best for Cornwall. Trash. Cornwall is one of the poorest counties in the UK. Several UK cathedrals and collegiate foundations have proved that a cathedral choir can be run using children from the state system and still maintaining high standards. Private or state, Truro will have a fabulous choir - the superb music staff at the cathedral will make it work, but it is so sad that the only winners in this will be the children of parents who can afford to pay the remaining 75% of the Truro School fees, or those who dont have any money and will pretty much get means tested bursaries on top.
