Let me first admit that this post is not to personalise or to pick up controversy. It is an attempt to look at a damaging issue by Governance point of view. This preamble is required with the precedence of Prof Nisar Ahmed’s statement on Legalisation of Prostitution. As I understand media, which has no business but gaining popularity, what makes us turn sane and view the topic with governance point of view? While ‘legalising’ never means “providing sanctity” to prostitution what is the true intention of such statement? 1. With legalisation, the spots in which such activities happen get notified. First change that would occur is saving our neighbourhood from the embarrassment of living next to otherwise labelled profession. 2. With legalisation, those who run this profession will get at least an identity card. Thus, whether one likes or not, lot of healthcare aides can be provided to them on humanitarian basis. Caring them is humanitarian as well as precautionary need. 3. Legalised and noticed spots cannot traffic girls illegally. Don’t you think this is a blessing in disguise to otherwise rampant ‘women’ trafficking? 4. Every activity then comes to the radar of law. It can even levy tax on such professions which are supported by men with extra money. 5. Only permitted brothels with women with license will run the show; don’t you think the flimsy ladies (typically ‘respected house-wives’) who move in and make fast money would think twice before spoiling their own lives n defaming family? It is just known that none can stop prostitution in this world, whether we like it or not. But we can attempt stopping the unwilling women being victimised by governing them through law. Rest of the society can at least sleep at peace without having to see raids next to homes.
