Let me personally thank Goddard College students for inviting Mumia Abu-Jamal to give a graduation speech. Let me personally thank the new interim president for supporting this decision and staying true to the Colleges roots and mission to empower people of all backgrounds to seek out higher educational opportunities. After the previous administration started to abandon these values, and nearly bankrupt the College in the process, Im hopeful that we can renew our promises to promote the very kind of progressive educational model that runs in stark contrast to the black-and-white narratives the media is painting over this decision. Goddard College is not obscure nor is it an easy way to earn a degree. What it is, instead, a place to look at privilege and to be self-reflective in way that reveals certain kinds of injustices in the world, of which are our racist policing system is one of them.
