Let me put a bow on this... I dont call any Native Americans - TopicsExpress

Let me put a bow on this... I dont call any Native Americans redskin. I dont know of anyone who would think to call a Native American a redskin. I have never heard anyone call a Native American a redskin in person, on TV, nor have I ever read any literature, fiction or non-fiction, that referred to a Native American as a redskin (not including the dictionary, which is one of the most antiquated books known to man). The only thing I ever think of when I hear redskin, is a member of the Washington Redskins, of which there are no Native Americans. I dont think of anything negative (unlike most Dallas fans), and I certainly dont attribute anything negative to Native Americans. If I saw a Native American at a Redskins game in Redskins gear, they would be a Redskins fan, not a redskin, unless, of course, they were on the team. Redskin is a word I never use negatively, that I never use at someone that could be construed negatively, I never hear used negatively outside of football, and I associate with a totally different meaning that I am passionate about. What gives you the right to take my word out of my vocabulary? Not even all Native Americans agree that it is a slight, which makes it different from some other taboo words which we all can agree on. All the media types that have stopped using the word, now, even though they have been saying it for years, are bandwagon jumpers. They stopped because everybody else was doing it. If you really thought it was a bad word, you never would have used it. Ever. Funny how so many people became enlightened at the same time. Not a single broadcaster blinked twice 20 years ago. Every paper covered the REDSKINS in all their glory, and all their woe. Forget the NFL. Look at society. If this rule applies to the game of football, then how about the game of life? I still dont get the offense other than it describes a person by the color of their skin. By this logic, I want to see black and white taken out of our vocabulary as adjectives, or even pronouns, to describe people. More is implied by those words, oft times negative, prejudicial, and stereotypical, than is implied by redskin, and all are born from the same definition of a person...skin color. That will never happen, because police officers wont be able to describe people anymore, census takers will be confused, and political activist groups will wither and die, but I digress. I am increasingly tired of the coverage that this topic gets, which is why I am wrapping it up, for me at least, right here. If you share my opinion, then share my opinion.
