Let me seize this opportunity to reemphasize my stance on true federalism. That the federal government (President Jonathan) is arbitrarily harassing the citizens of Rivers state with federal force (The Police) and thereby violate constitutional provisions is as a result of over-centralization of power at the center. If power is devolved to sub-national units as it should be in a true federal system, for instance in the area of security (State Police), the show of force by the likes of Police Commissioner Mbu will never exist. There are so many areas in the national discourse which bothers on devolution of power. It is understandable that state governors may use state police for selfish objectives but this also can be taken care of legally. These are key problematic areas of Nigerian federal system which must be urgently addressed by the upcoming national confab if the prospect of a united country is to be realized.
