Let me start by saying that I am not an economist. I know exactly - TopicsExpress

Let me start by saying that I am not an economist. I know exactly ONE economist, and he is progressive, and most likely will back up what I am about to say. I have given this much thought. Again, let me say that I am sure there are plenty of intellectual theories on both sides of this arguments, but there is only one moral side. Here I go. The Affordable Care Act seeks to make insurance available to EVERY American regardless of their ability to pay, and regardless of their health. (did I get that right? Are you with me so far?) In order to do that, the Affordable Care Act mandates that the Americans who are currently paying for insurance will pay more than they have, and that their insurance coverage (on the main) will be better across the board. (Did I get that right?) What my second point means is that often, people who are getting very basic coverage (here I am using a more objective term, when what I really want to say in some cases (not all, but some), is that they are paying very very low premiums for what amounts to really shitty coverage; are now mandated to get much better coverage in part to pick up the slack for their poor, sick, or aged brothers and sisters who cant afford to pay for their own. Now, I just read a Pew Poll (non partisan and deeply respected) that said that 70% of Evangelicals, and 50% of mainline Protestants consider themselves Conservative. Surprised? I sure am. I thought the number would be much higher. But here is what that suggests to me. It suggests that the issue of pocketbook, of budget if you will, supersedes the issue of taking care of the poor. But here is the thing. When we take care of the poor, the children, the elderly, and the people with pre existing conditions, their capacity to be productive (in the case of pre existing conditions, and in the case of moving out of poverty and in the case of the young) is vastly improved. This is demonstrable. (Right Fred?). When we dont take care of them, the malaise that is so deep, the hopelessness and helplessness like quicksand, that we ALL have experienced in one way or another, kills living people. You know its true. You know its true. So what if you are not a woman and your policy covers pregnancy...do you honestly use every doctors appointment you can anyway? And no, for those of you who are going to say that kindness shouldnt be mandated, you are absolutely right, kindness shouldnt be mandated. Why then are you the same people who say that life is sacred? No....really answer the question. Dont you DARE get off the hook by not answering the question. I have more, but thats it for now.
