Let me tell you a story. Ill call it: Me & My Lincoln. But mostly its about a loving, generous, mischievous God who loves to give us the desires of our hearts and who does so even when those desires seem totally out of reach. I have a little prayer. Its very self-serving,but it goes: Lord, Id like the very best for the very least. Ive always wanted a classy black-on-black Lincoln Town Car. The President has one. The Mob has one. I wanted one too. But theres a big catch. I wanted the EXEC-L stretch version, the one that gives you lots of extra room in the back seat. I wanted that one because I want my family and friends and passengers to be comfortable in the back seat, especially those with long legs, not all jammed in and crunched up. A huge problem with that desire. Lincoln Motor Company does not sell that model to the general public. They only sell that model to Limo Companies, which drive them into the ground. Last November, four of us accompanied Jacquie Sullivan, the wonderful founder of In God We Trust - America and Bakersfields longest-serving city council member, to the annual meeting of the League of American Cities at the Seattle Convention Center. Our goal was to encourage Americas elected officials to display our nations official motto in the chambers where they conduct the peoples business. The convention had just ended. We were walking out the main doors of the Convention Hall into the chilly air to pick up our luggage and get to the Seattle Airport to catch our flight. Suddenly, right in front of us, parked at the curb, was the exact car I always wanted, right down to the rims on the wheels. Standing beside the car was a tall Somali limo driver. I walked right up the car, pointed straight at it and said, Thats my car! His name was Sam He smiled. I said, Wanna sell it? To my surprise, he said, Yes! He sounded serious. I said, Really? Again he said, Yes. I said, Why? He said, Because its a 2004. My boss just phased out all 2004 models. I cant drive it for my company anymore. I need to buy a newer model. I said, Whats the mileage? He said, 93,000---which is nothing for a Town Car. I said, How much? He said, $6,000. In disbelief, I said, Only $6,000 dollars?! I knew my financial troubles had left me unable to borrow even that small amount. Suddenly Jacquie spoke up and said, Don, Ill loan you $6,000. Amazed, I said, Jacquie, it would take me a while to pay you back. She said, Thats okay. With warm encouragement from the others, I said to Sam, You wanna sell it NOW? He said, Sure! We rushed to a supermarket branch of Wells Fargo just before closing time, did the paperwork, and paid the money. Just like that it was a done deal. Sam and I rushed the others to the airport, then drove to his apartment a few blocks off I-5. He and I shook hands, I got behind the wheel and said goodbye. I drove it straight home non-stop to Bakersfield through a typical, Northwest, all-night rain storm. The good Lord didnt have to do that, but He did. He did the seemingly impossible so fast we had to rush to keep up. I am so grateful and so amazed at how it all happened. --dc
