Lets Leave Joke Apart (1) Friends, have you taken time to think about the latest news rocking the social media? I guess no average user of the media would claim ignorant of the publicity given to the dreaded ebola virus. This publicity has assumed a number of regular and irregular approaches. While some objectively try to educate and sensitize the users of social media about this ugly visitor, others try to create fun with the misfortune, cracking jokes and amusing people. It is not bad to be happy even in the midst of adversities, but it is bad to trivialise delicate matters that concern human life and societal wellbeing. I am of the opinion that our attitude towards the life-threatening ebola virus should be that of a sober reflection for a way forward rather than caricature. People post pictures of all sorts of malignant diseases all in the name of ebola and ask people to type AMEN just to promote their Facebook pages. These pictures and jokes cannot remedy the situation. Imagine your loved one being infected with this virus, I guess you wont have the time to crack ebola jokes, so why crack them now you are not affected. Ebola threatens community life, it threatens human interaction, it threatens our liturgical life, it threatens our existence. If you cant do anything to stop it, then dont do anything to create unnecessary tension and panic. Dont escalate peoples fears and make them die before their time or live in isolation. Let us turn to God at this time for help so that He helps us conquer this virus as we did to SARS, BIRD FLU, HIV/AIDS, etc. What we need is more prayers, not more jokes.
