Lets chat about compounding pharmacies ... Compounding pharmacies custom-blend prescription medications and/or supplements, typically using more natural alternatives to mainstream prescription medications. Im a huge fan of compounding, especially for thyroid medications and bio-identical hormones. (Many other prescriptions are available.) Unfortunately, a single bad apple compounding pharmacy caused the FDA to consider closing compounding pharmacies and caused the media to assume all compounding pharmacies are dangerous. Nothing could be further from the truth! Most compounding pharmacies are run by pharmacists who have a much broader knowledge than a standard pharmacist and who insist on the highest standards of purity and cleanliness possible in their pharmacy. One I work with is run by a husband and wife team. The wife is a Pharm. D (combination of an MD and pharmacist) and the husband is an ND. The wisdom they dispense and their willingness to educate MDs has allowed many of my clients to return to health. When working with a compounding pharmacy, check to see what certifications they have. It may also help to find out what fillers they use in their capsules. My compounding pharmacy uses a non-dairy probiotic filler, but some use other less beneficial fillers. Most do not accept insurance, but will provide everything you need to file yourself. Do you work with a compounding pharmacy? What has your experience been?
