Lets face it - Scots poke fun at other Scots (its in our nature and its not done in an ultimately unkind way but its just what we do in our humour). However, my goodness, how well the people in Glasgow have conducted themselves in the tragedy of the helicopter crash on the Clutha. Glasgow is affectionately known as the land of Taggart or of Still Game and other shows which, tho we all may enjoy them - no, they dont really paint the city in the best light?. Yet, in REALITY, in a moment of totally unforseen tragedy, when events so very quickly and horrifically unfolded - those in the Clutha and outside they instantly worked together to do SO VERY MUCH to try and help in whatever way they could. Reports again and again talk of so many acts of selfless bravery. Friend or stranger, people came together to help each other - not running away from the scene but running towards it to try and do whatever they could (and it moves me to tears). I HAVE SUCH RESPECT FOR THESE PEOPLE. Yes, in time, the initial pain of this will pass and, in yet more time - affectionately again we will refer to other Scots as only Scots can, with that unique humour and banter which we so readily exchange. But, as time does pass I really would hope that all of us in Scotland (and beyond) NEVER forget just how much the people in Glasgow did to step up to the mark and probably by doing so, this cohesive group of good samaritans PULLED TOGETHER to save so many other precious lives. As a Scot living in Edinburgh, my goodness Glasgow - I am proud of what you have done in this incident. This was never the St Andrews Day that we could ever have imagined but, in this sad time when Scotlands Saltire flags are flown at half mast, our wee nation has demonstrated that we are a people with a big heart and that Glaswegians have much to be proud of. I am so, so sorry for all those who have passed away, my thoughts are with their family and friends but I also know that these people now at peace will NOT be forgotten. Thanks to all the emergency services who attended and to the untrained common man who stepped in without hesitation - T H A N K Y O U ! ! !
