Lets talk Tolkien. 1937 was a big year for dwarves. September - TopicsExpress

Lets talk Tolkien. 1937 was a big year for dwarves. September 21, The Hobbit was released then exactly three months later on December 21, Walt Disneys Snow White premiered. Tolkien was 45 years old and still trying to build a career at Oxford and through published poetry. The Hobbit story had kicked around for 5 years, and Disney had been in production for at least 2 years. The Hobbit sold out its entire first print run by December, just before Disneys film release. Was J.R.R. Tolkien riding an existing wave of dwarf storytelling, or did he start the trend? Would this also have influenced his disdain for Walt Disney, having a competing dwarf story in the marketplace at the same exact time?
