Lets talk about LISTERIA MONOCYTOGENES. I got a message on my cellphone from my local Wegmans that I purchased fruit that may have been contaminated with this bacteria. I need to share some important info about this bug. 1. It is extremely rare to develop an illness from Listeria. You must ingest large quantities of it and foods that are cooked or hot will not carry the disease. 2. The symptoms are usually a short self limited illness of nausea, vomiting and loose stools (usually 2 days or less) 3. More serious infections like meningitis are extremely rare and more likely in patients who are pregnant or have suppressed immunity (cancer pts etc.) 4. The incubation period is typically 6 hours to 10 days and commonly around 24 hours. If you feel you may have been exposed to Listeria and have developed symptoms above, please dont be alarmed but do call your doctor right away.
