Lets talk about how Chattanooga being on this list is kind of bullshit. 1) Artists are censored and policed in this town regularly. Few funders and venues allow artists to really do their thing. 2) Chattanooga does not like to pay artists and when we do get paid, rarely is it what we are worth or would make in Atlanta, Nashville, or almost any other city. 3) Young artists are rarely valued in the local scene when it comes to providing opportunities for growth and development. 4) Chattanooga is more interested in bringing in outside art as creative astroturf than cultivating a local art community. Ask any of the countless talented individuals who have left this city never to return. From Bessie Smith to young creatives who have recently departed Chattanoooga for a place of genuine opportunity. FYI: Austin, Asheville, Atlanta, Nashville, Savannah, New York, L.A., and New Orleans are all places that artists I have known have gone to from Chattanooga and they all say they are much happier for it.Yes, Chattanooga is ripe with young artistic talent, but we need to create genuinely viable reasons for them, for us, to stay and thrive. Being on a list under a degree of false pretense does not make anything the article asserts by its title true.
