Letter #13 from a Father to His Son Shane, dad. Fifteen months now since you left this world. For this letter, I decided to write a story. It begins in 1988. I’m not as creative as you, but here goes….. It’s a boy! Brooke has a brother. We have a son. A blessed family. Shane. So perfect, lying there. Look, he’s got my eyes. Oh the things I will teach him. The places we will go. I wonder if he’ll play sports or music. Or be good at math, or like reading books. I wonder who he’ll marry, or if he’ll have a son too. Kindergarten. I’m nervous. And kinda sad. What if they make fun of him? What if he doesn’t know somethin’, and gets embarrassed? What if he misses me? Or worse…..what if he doesn’t? Bike rides. Bedtime stories. Puzzles. Cartoons. Piggyback rides. Pizza. Birthday parties. Baseball. Soccer. Playing the drums. Laughter. Tears. Hugs. “I love you, Shane”. “Love you, dad”. Oh the things I will teach you. The places we will go. Football. Band. Homework. School projects. Jam sessions. Church youth groups. Family vacations. Girlfriends. Writing songs & poems. Working out. Playing gigs………. Graduation. When did you become a young man? When did I stop being one? Seems like yesterday I sang you to sleep. And today you sang one of your original songs. Oh the things I will teach you. The places we will go. Midnight…the end of a normal summer day. “Goodnight Shane”. “Dad, goodnight”. One hour later… “Choking! Who’s choking? Shane! Shane! Wake up! Can you hear me? Keep breathing. Shane! shane…don’t leave……us….. Heart. Stopped. Motionless. A beautiful life. Ended too soon. A man. A brother. A son. A shattered family. Shane. So perfect, lying there. Look, you’ve got my heart. Oh the things you taught me. The places we did go. Shane, I love you beyond feelings. I miss you beyond words. But we will see you again…someday. And the places we will go! Love, dad
