Letter: Rep. Jenkins erred on veterans benefits Posted: January 11, 2014 - 2:53pm Rep. Lynn Jenkins’ recent letter to the editor, published in the Leavenworth Times, speaks to her voting to support a bill that impacted negatively on many constituents of the 2nd Congressional District. The bill not only impacted the cost-of-living allowance of retired military personnel, but also on federal employees by requiring them to pay more toward their retirement. Congress later learned the bill also impacted veterans with disabilities. Jenkins left this little fact out of her letter. Many in Congress expressed shock that this occurred. Of course, if they had read the bill they would have known what it did. Jenkins represents a district that has a large military and federal work force. For her to support the bill was betrayal. She says she is going to offer a bill that will reverse the attack on the military COLA and find savings elsewhere. Of course, we all know how that works in Washington. Jenkins is not working in Congress to represent her constituents in the 2nd District. For her to state that she voted for the bill to achieve some political harmony in Washington, D.C., at our expense is simply unacceptable. Given all the money Congress is giving to foreign countries that hate the United States and are trying to kill Americans, Jenkins’ vote to take money from the military and federal work force that is trying to keep our country safe at the risk of loosing their lives was unconscionable. Jenkins’ actions do not warrant her re-election in November to return to Washington. All voters of the 2nd District should begin now to identify and support a replacement who will represent the people of the district and not the good old boy Washington establishment. R.L. RICHARDSON, Leavenworth
