Letter To Editor: Agony Of Rivers students Preparing For Law School Many Rivers students who are due for Law School before the end of the year are in dilemma over how to meet up with the school fees of about 300,000 naira which they must pay if the hope of advancing in their chosen carrier must be realized. There are valid fears that many of these students, who had managed with difficulty to complete the first leg of the programme in different institutions of higher learning in the absence of bursary from the Rivers state Government, might not be able to go to the Law School without assistance. The students are therefore calling on the government of Rivers state and Local Government Councils to come to their aide, especially in this era of empowerment in order to safeguard their future. It will be very unfortunate for the future leaders of the state to be left stranded when their colleagues from other less endowed states enjoy the support of their governments in the payment of all or part of their fees in the Law School. Some years ago, students of Rivers origin enjoyed bursaries and support in the payment of Law School fees from government but the suspension of these subsidies have been the reason for increased frustration among many students, especially the indigent ones. The current dilemma of Rivers students in institutions of higher learning and indeed the neglect of the welfare of vast majority of Rivers people is a lesson for all voters in the state. Anyone who wants to rule in future must tell Rivers people in clear terms, his or her plans on how to improve the quality of lives of the vast majority, as against sending some children abroad at unbelievable cost only amounts to misplacement of priority: Not only that some of the courses are available here, integrity of selection process is undermined by the uninspiring grades that some of them return with. Rivers people must insist on fit and proper persons in all political offices in 2015 as a way of ensuring that the common wealth is not cornered by a handful but gets to all citizens.
