Letter from Tim Phillips, president, Americans for Prosperity. What a shame. Last night, members of the House and Senate passed a deal that goes against everything you and I have fought so hard for. It does nothing to address the real issues facing our nation: government overspending and runaway entitlements that have us nearing $17 trillion in debt. Congress went back on the promises it made in 2011 to cap government spending at $967 billion, a level previously agreed to in the Budget Control Act. Congress made this promise to the American people, but broke that promise in a late-night deal with Barack Obama and Harry Reid. Instead of making responsible spending cuts, this last-minute deal allows the government to spend well beyond its means and increases our borrowing limit without scrutinizing the wasteful spending that is putting us further into debt. Congress clearly has no qualms about continuing this trend of reckless spending that threatens the economy and hurts job growth. From the beginning, weve made it clear that any increase in the debt limit must be tied to dollar-for-dollar spending cuts. Last week we asked you to send this message to Congress, and tens of thousands of you immediately took action. Unfortunately, Congress didnt listen. But this is not the time to give up. Even now, AFP is reviewing new strategies and tactics to bring grassroots pressure to bear on members of Congress and hold them accountable for their votes. My commitment to you is that we are going to engage in the spending fight on a whole new level over the next few months. We won an important victory by securing lower spending levels under the Sequester, and we simply cannot lose ground in that fight. Now is not the time to walk away from the fight! We must and will win, with your help. When AFP activists like you engage on the issues of the day, we achieve the unachievable. We are making a difference across the country, from states like Indiana to North Carolina. This is the battle for the future of our country. Lets get to work, Tim Phillips AFP President
