Letter home; June 1863 Harpers Ferry W. Virginia Dear good wife, I have pen and paper in hand for a letter, I envy this paper for it shall feel your touch before me. So I must write upon it before my courage fails me. This is to be our last night in camp on the Potomac on the morrow we march into Maryland and beyond. I believe if we can defeat the union army on their on soil they will let us be. This war is to long and we are ready for it to end, the men all have stout hearts and a firm resolve to finish this thing what ever we must do. Peace is our dream and our on country to ourselves. Wife, no this, there will be no breath pass my lips or thought go through my mind that will not be about you, our time together has been my only true joy. If it be gods will and I return never shall my shadow fall on a place where we are apart. I pray the sweet Angels walk with you every day. I must close now the light is fading, but not my heart . Your simple husband Scotty
