Letter of the Council of Imams to The ambassador of Egypt --- August 15, 2013 Mr. Wael Ahmed Kamal His Excellency – The ambassador of Egypt Embassy of Egypt 454 Laurier Ave E Ottawa ON K1N 6R3 Dear Sir: Subject: Current Aggression and Carnage in Egypt We, the undersigned, founding members of The Council of Imams of Ottawa-Gatineau representing the Muslim community of Ottawa-Gatineau and concerned Canadians, hereby express our profound condemnation for the violence currently taking place across Egypt. A mass killing of innocent civilians including elderly, women and children cannot be justified in any circumstances let alone while the victims are exercising their democratic rights. As you maybe well aware that irrespective of individual motivation and religious beliefs, hurting humans through physical violence and brute force are neither part of Islam nor any civil society. No government or authorities have ever won by suppressing the will of its people. A hostile and aggressive stance can never transform individuals and masses into law abiding, obedient and proud citizens. Hostilities will perpetuate further hostilities without bounds. As the spiritual leaders of Canadian Muslims, we firmly believe that the actions undertaken by the current Egyptian government and the military are inhumane, unnecessarily harsh, unwarranted; and are not justifiable at any rate or reason. Not only is it damaging the image of Egypt and its people across the globe, it is also causing irreparable damage to the psyche of the nation and future generations. We request that the current rage and atrocities being committed against innocent civilians, women and children must be stopped at once. We also request that your Excellency convey the concerns and condemnation of Canadians to the governing authorities in Egypt.
