Letter the DI sent...thanking everyone who helped!! :) Thank You Calgary! At 7am on June 21st, the Bow River flooded the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre and Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson ordered all 1,200 of our clients to evacuate. We evacuated in minutes. Food was left half eaten, personal belongings were abandoned. We opened a temporary shelter in the Thorncliffe/Greenview community. People with very little arrived with nothing. We needed help – our clients needed help. Amidst the chaos, calm prevailed. Community connected. No one went hungry. Everyone is safe. Our clients and staff have you to thank. The emergency has since passed, but we continue to be overwhelmed by the sacrifices you made and the support you shared. Over 2,000 donors shared food and supplies. People offered a hug when we needed it most. An elderly woman donated her daughter’s old baby blanket. She apologized, explaining that’s all she could give. Over 1,000 people volunteered their time and talent. Local hero, paramedic Brendan Hood volunteered over 100 hours. Our youngest volunteer was 10 months old. She may be small, but she lifted all our spirits. Our media partners called hourly, asking about our needs, updating Calgarians. You inspired people around us, giving people courage and strength. Your support demonstrated to all Calgarians that every person has value. The community of Thorncliffe/Greenview also deserves a special thank you. When people became homeless, they opened their hearts and welcomed us with open arms. Their compassion kept hope alive. They created joy. We are forever indebted. We have returned to our downtown shelter, damaged by the flood, and a lot of work remains. Your continued support means we are quickly resuming all our critical programs and services. You make it possible to feed, clothe, and counsel Calgary’s homeless to a better future. The DI is a place where people matter. It’s a place where people live, learn and thrive. It’s a place where everyone can find their unique voice. Each person is recognized for their value, whatever their perspective, whatever their condition. This is all possible because of you. So thanks again.
