(Letter to Bishop Michael J. Sis) January 15, 2014 Dear Brother Bishop, I am writing to bring to your attention the upcoming release of Son of God, a new movie based on the life of our Lord. The filmmakers, Roma Downey (star of the TV show Touched by an Angel) and Mark Burnett (producer of reality-TV shows The Voice Survivor and The Apprentice), who previously created the TV mini-series The Bible, that aired on the History Channel last year, are now producing this new feature film as a testament to their faith. It has been nearly 50 years since a major motion picture has been made about the whole life of Jesus. In this film, the entire cast vividly depicts the life, death and resurrection of our Lord. I hope the movie will be an evangelization resource to share the teachings of the Gospels and the Word of God with our society. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on February, 28, and will also be available in Spanish in select theaters. Roma and Mark enlisted the help of Catholic theological and catechetical experts and have developed a variety of ways for Catholics to participate in the film. They are providing these materials with the hope that Son of God will bring people into a deeper relationship with Jesus. Monsignor Brian Bransfield, Associate General Secretary of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has authored a companion reflection guide based on scenes from the film which encourages viewers to reflect on the deeper meaning ofthe associated scripture passages. In addition, several generous Catholic benefactors, including the Knight of Columbus, have pledged to donate thousands oifree tickets to dioceses throughout the country to make this film available to families and especially youth. In this packet you will find folders with customized materials. I invite you to promote awareness ofthis film within your diocese by distributing these materials through your appropriate offices. They will find information on how to take advantage of the films resources and free tickets. It is my sincere hope that through the support of our Catholic community and other Christian communities we can share the Gospel message in Son of God with people of faith throughout our country, so that we may grow in our knowledge of Jesus and come together as sons and daughters of God. With gratitude for your support, I offer my prayers for you and your ministry. Sincerely, yours in Christ, Most Reverend Jose H. Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles
