Letter to my fb friends and to the Taunton Gazette: In response to the Taunton Daily Gazette article on January 21, 2014 - Emergency shelters cause for concern at meeting of Greater Attleboro/Taunton Coalition on Homeless I am writing this letter to clarify my statements and to correct the impression that the article in the Gazette gave of my opinion during the recent GATCH meeting. I sincerely apologize for the way that my comments were conveyed in the paper, in Regards to the homeless in Taunton and the work of the churches. First let me state that I have nothing but the greatest respect for the work that the Greater Taunton Clergy do in all areas of community service, but especially their work with the homeless. . It was never my intention to state or imply that the churches are not working on the cause of the homeless. I know all too well what a challenging issue this is, and how much the churches are contributing to this cause. My goal was to simply convey the importance of the churches to be involved in the conversation about the homeless, both because of all they have contributed and because of the work that we all still have to do together as a city. While I did say at the GATCH Meeting that “Its about time churches come into play and help out the homeless. I spoke with leaders of local churches who said they want to continue to help. What we really need to do, is have a plan in place. It was not said with the intent of offending anyone, but rather in recognition that the faith-based community typically gets things done when no one else can. With that said, I sincerely hope that everyone in the city will step back and acknowledge that we have a public health issue not a “problem.” Let’s first make sure that those in need have safe shelter in bad weather, cold or hot, and then let’s take the next step to provide those in need with the right services so we can help them help themselves to improve the quality of their lives.
