Letter to the Editor Patriots this is a must read! Patti Best is a guest columnist for the Asheville Citizen Times. And a artist who lives in Canton. October 20, 2014 Letter to the Editor To our current county commissioners, with the hope some of you will soon be leaving your seat. To those remaining, this letter is long overdue! I may not speak for all the citizens of this county, but I suspect I speak for a large portion. Therefore, speaking for those who would agree with me, may I share our expectations for any elected county official; We expect respect for ALL our citizens, and find it appalling that you would use your position to ridicule and embarrass private citizens at public meetings. We have the right to redress our elected representatives, and should never have to fear reprisal! We expect respect for our property rights regardless of your need to increase revenue to stay ahead of your “unprecedented” spending. We expect respect for the constitutional box you should be working inside, yet seem determined to ignore! You tried to trample on our property rights in 2008 with the “Nuisance Ordinance”. Remember, this is the ordinance that would have in essence turned our county into a giant gated community. I have a suspicion this ordinance was thought up for the purpose of increasing county revenue through the fines that could have been levied against our citizens? What about the most recent property re-evaluation? It appears that properties over 500k were reduced in value on the tax books, but properties under 300k were increased on the tax books. However, the actual sales of these properties show an entirely different picture, with higher priced properties in fact selling above the tax value given, and the lower priced properties selling below the tax value given. And now, “The Emergency Management” ordinance. No acceptable defense can be given for this ordinance… (Citizens, you need to read this one for yourselves!)For these reasons, and many more, I will vote Denny King for county commissioner. He has stood up for the Haywood County tax payer for years, working tirelessly, even spending his own income to expose the injustices of those of you currently sitting in the commissioners seats. It is time for a REAL change! Patti H. Best
