Letter to the editor: Would the real SANCO leaders stand up? The Lephalale Municipality office of communication and public participation has been inundated with media enquiries about the march organised by “SANCO” which is scheduled to take place on 13 November. We want to put the following points in their true perspective: Lephalale mayor, Clr Moloko Jack Maeko, is not opposed to the march and does not plan to deploy ‘soldiers’ to prevent it as reported by Mishack Moloantoa. The mayor did not distrubute beer and try to dissuade residents from marching when he visited Mamojela Park on October 19 as alleged by Kenneth Manaka. Manaka knows that no liquor was served at the meeting because he attended the meeting and was given the opportunity to raise his issues during the meeting. The mass openly disagreed with Moloantoa when he introduced himself as chairperson of SANCO-Lephalale and Manaka when he introduced himself as secretary of SANCO in Lephalale. The people challenged them to tell them when, where and by whom were they elected as SANCO leaders. They were requested to leave Lephalale and go and raise service delivery issues in Mogalakwena, where they are registered to vote. Lephalale municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Maeko, recognise SANCO as a legitimate civic structure that represents community members. We have never experienced hostility from this community structure and the mayor has never shut our door when they needed to get into the office. Let us conclude by putting the issue of service delivery at Mamojela Park in perspective. Mamojela Park, like Steve Biko at Ga Shongoane, is an informal settlement, and the council, led by Mayor Maeko, has initiated the process of formalising it. We need to apply to Provincial Department of Corporate Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA). The process was outlined by the Mayor during community consultative meeting that was held at Mamojela Park in February. Moloantoa and Manaka have the right to organise and lead a march. But if they are not SANCO leaders and they must not use SANCO ticket as this can be misleading. The ANC-led Lephalale municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Maeko, is ready to meet and discuss developmental issues that are meant to take Lephalale forward.
