Letter with my son today: I was told that my son started a “minor riot” in English class today when he tried to explain that children can refuse the test without a parent’s note. I was told that he argued and was told that he was wrong. I would like to clarify for him and for you, that he is absolutely, 100% right! It is every child’s right, by United States Constitutional Law, to refuse to take these tests, at any point, for any reason. Jonathan has with him “Appendix P” from the 2014 Grades 3-8 Common Core English Language Arts and Mathematics Tests School Administrator’s Manual, which clearly states the law regarding the State Tests. Technically, if a child would still like to refuse the test today, you can mark this as a “999”, due to administrative error, as the children were given incorrect information when they expressed a desire to refuse to take the test yesterday. Please do not dismiss Jonathan or be angry with him for speaking up. I have made sure that he is well versed regarding refusing the state tests. He was right! Furthermore, he said that someone told him that not taking the tests will affect his placement in AIS or Honors classes, and I would like to point out and make sure that everyone is completely understanding that the State Tests are to have NO bearing on a child’s placement for the following year. The State Tests are not to determine a child’s placement in any following classes. Please clarify this for the students! Having this belief is far, far too stressful for them! Any further questions, I will be very happy to discuss. Sincerely, Gail Simons
