Lettuce prices started to become active towards the end of the week. Iceberg ran up 20 percent as the week went on. Romaine also appears to be on the rise with higher demand becoming an issue across the board. Where it stops we don’t know but we do not expect it to reach the moon, with no major weather events out west. Celery is finally reaching a reasonable price. With better crop yields and Salinas expecting to start harvesting prices will continue to drop. High instances of seeders (the center of the stalk grows considerably higher than the outside) in the past month had pushed shipping point prices up 4x the same time last year. Quality has improved and prices will bottom soon. With Tropical Storm Andrea having pushed up the coast, expect quality issues out of Eastern Veg and Eastern Tomatoes. Water logged fields have postponed harvesting in some Grape and Cherry Tomato fields pushing prices higher. Squash and Cucumber shipments from the south have taken off throughout the week dropping prices to really reasonable levels. AGAIN BEWARE OF QUALITY WHEN THE PRICES DROP SUPER LOW. It is a sure sign of inventory glut. Carrot prices have steady risen in the past week. With the quality of Mexican Carrots being unreliable, we are thinking of switching to the pricier California Carrots just for quality. Avocado prices are all over the road. California Avocado yields appear to be sized very small. 48cts and higher are hard to come by, with 60s being still higher priced. 70 count and 84 counts are very cheap out west but nowhere to be found on the Jessup market. Limited supplier choices keep the price higher than normal. Eastern Cantaloupes are starting to come in. We have decided to get some boxed Athenas this week that look beautiful. As long as we can get them we will. It sure beats the Western Lopes which tend to be picked green for shipment. The Citrus market is still hot with Lemons and Oranges leading the way price wise. Florida fruit is starting to wind down a bit with California is feeling the pinch. Prices continue to remain higher than normal and quality remains pretty good. The Red Potato market is still unchanged. Prices are high but quality is generally good.
