Let’s talk about essential oil quality. Many companies produce or use essential oils but not all essential oil products are equal. There are different grades of oils.... •The lowest grade of essential oils are synthetic and are produced in labs that have copied the components of the oil. These oils are typically used in lotions and perfumes. •Next are food grade essential oils. These are used to flavor foods like lemon salad dressings or cinnamon chewing gum. Food coloring, pink slime, and twinkies are also all food grade, so being food grade does not necessarily mean it is good. •The next grade, which is intended to have health benefits, is therapeutic grade. This grade has held the standard in the essential oil industry for the last 30 years. These are the oils that are found in health food stores and used in the health industry. In order to be labeled as therapeutic grade, two basic tests are performed - the Gas Chromatography (GC) and Mass Spectrometry (MS) tests. Essentially what these tests do is separate the compounds within the oil, verify that there are no foreign contaminants, and make sure that the oil has it’s normal number of elements. To pass the Gas Chromatography test by itself only 3% of the essential oil must be present. Many companies don’t even conduct the Mass Spectrometry test at all. This means that there may be essential oils on the shelves of the health stores labeled as 100% pure therapeutic grade, but they really only contain 3% essential oil. doTERRA identified that this was a problem and set a new standard called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (or CPTG). doTERRA set this standard by demanding the highest quality in all aspects of growing, processing, and distributing essential oils.
