Leviticus, Mathew and Exodus Is anyone really surprised at - TopicsExpress

Leviticus, Mathew and Exodus Is anyone really surprised at societies right-wing zealots, their opposition to the fundamental belief of extending basic human rights to everyone - including the Gay, Lesbian and Transgendered Minorities ? Throughout the course of Human history, men have struggled to address questions like: What are basic human rights ? How do we enshrine, enact and protect these ? Who should we extended these rights to ? Those empires before us that have failed have all but disappeared or relegated to history. It surprises me that the same people who feel a need to hoard privilege. Those who demand definition based on the narrowest of criteria - our outside appearance or the people we love. These are the citizens quickest to claim that their individual rights are infringed, are the last to extend those rights, citizenship, to any one who doesnt look, speak or behave like they do. At best, their insecurity breeds man made constructs like segregation, intolerance and xenophobia. At worst, this insecurity breeds hate. So go ahead, throw me a line from Leviticus and claim it gives you the right to hate, that I am abhorrent in the eyes of God. I will react like all of the Meek before me. I will not go to war, change a single border or persecute any minority in an effort to define myself as worthy. I will politely remind you that Moses and the entire book of Exodus explains why I am worthy. In a soft voice I will remind you to take a second look at the book of Mathew and that Jesus was all about lifting each other up and celebrating the equality of all humanity. And I will pray. I will whisper the same prayer used by Slaves, Women, the Oppressed, the disabled and the forgotten - I will whisper it, quietly raising its volume each time. Daily I listen and read about the hate, anger, persecution and murder of the innocent by those who have laid claim to wisdom. Rulers who celebrate ignorance, steal privilege, the men who would train a dog through beatings rather than spare one single reward. I will pray for those people who have called me unworthy of a relationship with God. I will pray for those you have suffocated with the weight of your anger and the depth of your hate. I will pray that you become able to express your faith with Love and Empathy. I will pray that when the Meek finally do inherit the earth, that we will have the Wisdom, Empathy, Foresight and Love to shine a spotlight on your path and invite you to join the Journey. And So It Is...
