Lexi is out of surgery #3! They removed about 12 inches of her - TopicsExpress

Lexi is out of surgery #3! They removed about 12 inches of her intestine, including a few sections that were gangrene, and a few spots that had ruptured open. The bottom most one was just before the quite necessary valve that connects into her colen. The surgeon said he was very happy, and as fairly confident that he will not need to remove any more tissue. She needs 50 cm of small intestine to live without IV nutrition, and she has a little over 70cm remaining. He put a stoma in at her waist line (which he will most likely relocate in next surgery). She will have a colostomy bag there for 3 to 6 months. The inside of her intestines are still bruised and irritated, and the inner lining will likely die and shed off, needing to regrow, but were told this usually happens pretty quickly. Lexi will need to continue receiving nutrition intravenously, and will soon have a more long term port put in on her neck. This method of eating will continue for up to 2 years, until she is able to fully absorb nutrients through normal eating. Her intestines are no longer in a silo bag, she was instead covered with a sponge and suction type bandage, this allows draining as well as forgives swelling. Her little belly is VERY swollen, as is most of the rest of her. She will also soon be starting an anti fungal medication due to her long term triple antibiotic use. She is doing really good though post op wise. Breathing stayed the same as prior to operation, heart rate is just a little higher than normal. Blood pressure dropped, but was corrected with a very small increase of her blood pressure medicine. She also received another transfusion during surgery. Next surgery Monday. She will be washed out, everything checked and any necessary (but unexpected) repairs made. She will likely then continue with the suction closure until later in the week when as swelling allows she will finally have her tummy fully closed. A very long road ahead, but pretty good for a girl who wasnt supposed to get passed the last surgery. God is good, ALL the time!!! Please continue to pray for our baby, and thank you all for caring so much about our little Coo Coo Bird!
