LiDAR is a distance and ranging technique that uses light instead of radio waves. By using light, higher degrees of resolution is obtained over using Radar. It allows researchers to quickly gather data on sites they wish to survey and depending on the wavelength used, it can see though foliage exposing features that normally otherwise would be not be seen by traditional aerial photography. Here is a video created by William F. Romain demonstrating the application of LiDAR on the Serpent Mound in Ohio.
