Libby Clegg wins sprint gold for Scotland. I found this inspiring. A perfect example of how to run the race set before us. These athletes are visually impaired and need a running guide to help them stay on course. The running guide can give verbal direction and can set the pace. Both runners run with a tether. A tether works well for giving more information to the runner. With this technique, the guide runs slightly ahead and to one side and each runner holds one end of the tether. The guide still gives verbal directions, but the impaired runner will be able to detect bends in the road and other slight changes in direction much more easily with the tether. If an emergency arises, the guide will give a short pull on the tether or a slight push to the runners arm, and they know immediately which way to go. Both runners need to run in synchronisation with each other, arm to arm, stride to stride. Full co-operation between the runner and the guide is required if they are to run well. They run as one.
