Liberal Democrats Party statement dated July 11, 2014. The political Council of the Liberal Democrats Party held their weekly meeting, chaired by Tracy Chamoun and discussed the overall developments on both the local, and regional level, and they issued the following statement: Firstly: The party is dissatisfied with the complacency of the members of the House of Parliament with regard to the perpetuation of the vacancy in the presidency. This depicts Lebanon as a country unable to elect a president and to fulfill its constitutional obligations, The members of the Council appealed to all political leaders to take immediate action and agree on a President with a proven historical record of propriety and patriotism, who would support the role of institutions and would respect constitutional requirements, notwithstanding, the arbitrary extension of the mandate of members of Parliament whom to date, have proven to be ineffectual in the fulfillment of their duties. The election of a President is essential at this time to give strength and political endorsement to the Army and the Security Services in their task of protecting and stabilizing Lebanon, especially after the recent terrorist bombings and threats posed by the rise of ISIL. Secondly, At this time, the Party calls on all Lebanese and the different political groups to set aside their confessional and ideological differences including their grievances with each other, and to rally around their nation, the Lebanese Army and the Security Services in order, to get through this dangerous period which threatens the unity of the people, their safety and their economic welfare. They ask that the leaders pursue renewed dialogue amongst themselves, as the only means to acknowledge each other’s concerns and waylay any misgivings. Thirdly: The Party understands the implementation of the security measures taken in the Ain al-Hilweh camp, but warns against making these measures the basis for creating autonomous security units in the future, which would throw Lebanon back into memories of a painful past. They emphasized once again the need to support the legitimate national security forces and their mandate over the whole territory as an essential duty.
