Liberal senator Bill Heffernan has called for transparency in negotiations over international trade deals including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the China Free Trade Agreement (FTA), saying Australians deserve to know the details. “I mean, it’s all shrouded in bloody, in secrecy, I mean I would like to know what the details are,” Heffernan said. “I’ve asked the various players and I’ve been told ‘Bill, it’s all, it’s all in ... you know, we can’t tell you because it’s all sort of commercial-in-confidence’. You know, I just think we deserve to know the details of these things.” The Abbott government is in final negotiations on the China FTA and is expected to announce a deal next week when the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, addresses the Australian parliament after the G20 meeting in Brisbane.
