Liberia: Weah in Possession of American Passport? BY EMMANUEL WEEDEE-CONWAY, 15 JULY 2014 As the 2014 Special Senatorial Election draws nearer, reports have it that the Standard Bearer of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Ambassador George Manneh Weah is allegedly in possession of an American passport. But the reports have not been independently verified by this paper. The 2014 Special Election is scheduled for October 14, 2014. It is in keeping with the Liberian Constitution, which is regarded as the organic law of the country. Already, the moment of the election is intensifying, with those senators who are seeking re-election and other Liberians who are desirous of contesting, making known their intentions, their dreams and aspirations to the Liberian people via the media. The CDC standard bearer is one of the prominent politicians who is expected to contest the ensuing election in Montserrado County. The issue of dual citizenship is prohibited by the Article 28 of Liberian Constitution, which is regarded as the organic law of the country. Article 28 of the Liberian Constitution states that, Any person, at least one of whose parents was citizen of Liberia at the time of the persons birth, shall be a citizen of Liberia; provided that any such person shall upon reaching maturity renounce any other citizenship acquired by virtue of one parent being a citizen of another country. No citizen of the Republic shall be deprived of citizenship or nationality except as provided by law; and no person shall be denied the right to change citizenship or nationality. Some political pundits believe that most prominent Liberians, who have residence here and abroad, usually carry both Liberian and foreign passports, suggesting that Amb. Weah and other Liberians are supposedly in possession of more than one passport. The CDCs flag bearer has over the years been in midst of allegation of dual citizenship. It can be recalled that during the 2005 Presidential and General Elections, the CDC political leader was accused of being a French citizen, an allegation he rubbished. But in an interview with this paper via mobile phone, the Secretary General of the CDC, Mr. Nathaniel McGee, described the allegation as false and misleading. According to him, it is a scare tactic from oppositions who are the real bearers of American Passport and want to use the CDCs leader as a shield. He pointed out that no level of distraction will deter the Liberias peace envoy from contesting the ensuing election. This is a constitutional issue. Anyone who feels he/she has the information should go to court and stop causing noise around here, said the CDC scribe. No level of misinformation or distraction will stop him. No scare tactic will stop him either, he will contest this election, he added.
