Liberia court sends mercenaries to life imprisonment By TERRENCE SESAY in Monrovia | Tuesday, June 17 2014 All 13 mercenaries recently found guilty by a six-man jury at a Liberia court have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Criminal Court D presiding Judge Emery Paye said the convicts would serve the rest of their lives in prison. The 13 were part of 18 Liberians arrested in 2012 for their involvement in cross-border attacks into Cote dIvoire, which resulted in the death of several people, including seven UN Peacekeepers. The court also denied a motion filed earlier by the defence team for retrial of the case. Meanwhile, the head of the defence team, Mr Tiawon Gongloe, has taken exception to the verdict, describing it as inconsistent with the evidence adduced. He has accordingly announced that he would seek an appeal. Mr Gongloe also said the defence maintained its position that their clients were innocent of all the allegations. He, however, called on his clients to remain law abiding, as the defence did everything to take the case to another level. Those sentenced life include Nezee Barway, Oforee Diah, Edward Cole, Bobby Sarpee, Isaac Taryon, Prince Youtay and Mohammed Massaquoi, James Cooper, Sam Tarley and Morris Cole.
