Liberties a medieval peasant had that you do not: --Could not be compelled to serve in the military. --Did not have to pay income tax (the peasant probably paid less in dues to his lord than the average American does today). --Time off work for holidays, weddings, holy days, carnivals, etc. (pretty much any wholesome human activity that came along was considered valuable enough to tip the scales away from moneymaking). --Ability to bring religious truth to bear on public authorities, rather than having public authorities bringing secular superstition to bear on religion.
