Liberty Party, CDC Oppose Rodney Sieh’s Detention Liberia’s main opposition parties, Congress For Democratic Change (CDC) and Liberty Party (LP) are opposing the US$ 1.5 million libel verdict against FrontPage Africa Newspaper. It can be recalled that the Liberian local daily wrote a news article against former Agriculture Minister, Dr. Christopher Toe for ‘ Army worms’ assessment in Bong County. Minister Toe resigned after mounting public outcry from all walks of life. The paper’s publisher claimed that he quoted the audit report from the General Auditing Commission (GAC).Congress For Democratic Change (CDC) through its Vice Chairman for operation; Mulbah Morlu condemned the verdict against the Liberian local daily. According to him, the Supreme Court through the Civil Law Court has the jurisdiction, but the damage of US$ 1.5 million libel is ‘unreasonable’. He claimed that the action against the Paper is reportedly aimed at silencing the local media for it critical role in exposing alleged corrupt officials in this government. Mr. Morlu appealed to the court to reconsider its decision on Mr. Sieh. For its part, the National Executive Committee of Liberty Party says its attention has been drawn to the legal battle that is ongoing between the Management of the Frontpage Africa Newspaper and former Agriculture Minister, Dr. Chris Toe bordering on “defamation of character”. As an institution that subscribes to the rule of law, Liberty Party will do nothing to undermine the interpretation of the law by the High Court as is with the case in point. The Party warned that the trend the case is taking and the potential danger it poses to our collective quest for the building of a vibrant press that responds to the grave challenges of our time is bad for the Country. The Party, in a release made specific reference to the persistent calls by national leadership for a robust fight against the national scourge called “Corruption” and other vices.
