Liebe Freunde, dear Friends: hier ein interessantes Doktorandenstipendium - interesting scholarship offer for PhD project - supported by Volkswagen Stiftung, Jacobs University and Universität der Bundeswehr München: Scholarship Announcement For a research project on The “Virgin Lands Campaign” in Kazakhstan, 1953-1970 Jacobs University Bremen is seeking a qualified PhD student (f/m) from Kazakhstan. The research project is embedded in a larger research project on The International History of Rural Development since 1950 funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Marc Frey (Professor of Contemporary History/History of International Relations, Bundeswehr University Munich) and Corinna R. Unger (Professor of Modern European History, Jacobs University Bremen). The scholarship is offered for 39 months beginning on April 1, 2015 and ending on July 31, 2018. The monthly allowance is 1.365,00 Euros. Additional funding for research trips in Russia and Kazakhstan is available, as are funds for a two-month intensive German course. The allowance does not cover health insurance, visa fees etc. Project work will be conducted at Jacobs University Bremen, at the home institution in Kazakhstan (one semester), and in archives in Russia and Kazakhstan. The Volkswagen Foundation and the Principal Investigators seek to support the development of history as an academic discipline in Kazakhstan. The prospective candidate is therefore expected to live in Kazakhstan at the time of the application and be affiliated with a university in Kazakhstan. Responsibilities and Duties Historical research on the ‘Virgin Lands Campaign’ in Kazakhstan within the wider framework of the research project on the International history of Rural Development. Composition of a PhD dissertation on the topic, to be submitted to Jacobs University Bremen. The thesis will be written in English. Minimum Qualifications • Excellent M.A. in modern/contemporary history or a field closely related to the research project on Kazakhstan and/or the overall research project on the International History of Rural Development since 1950 • Fluency in English and Russian (written and oral), willingness to learn basic German • Dedication to team work and independent research • Experience with archival work in Kazakhstan and/or Russia is a definite plus How to Apply Letters of application must be received by November 1, 2014 for consideration.
