Lieutenant General Milley assumed command of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command on May 2, 2013. He also serves as the Deputy Commanding General, United States Forces – Afghanistan, and as the Commanding General, U.S. Army III Corps. Lieutenant General Milley graduated from Princeton University and was commissioned in 1980. His key staff assignments include operations officer at the battalion, brigade, and division levels; Chief of Staff for the 25th Infantry Division (Light); Joint Operations Division Chief on The Joint Staff; Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense; and Deputy Director for Regional Operations (J33) for The Joint Staff. Lieutenant General Milley has held command positions in Airborne, Air Assault, Light Infantry, and Special Forces units. He commanded 1st Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (Currahee); he commanded the United States Provisional Brigade/Task Force Eagle, 25th Infantry Division (Light), during their deployment to Bosnia-Herzegovina in support of OPERATION JOINT FORGE; he led the 2d Brigade Combat Team (Commando), 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) in combat in both Iraq and Afghanistan; he was the Deputy Commanding General (Operations) for the 101st Airborne Division deployed to Regional Command-East, Afghanistan and he most recently commanded the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry). Lieutenant General Milley has deployed on multiple combat, contingency, peacekeeping, and security force assistance operations. He served as a commander in OPERATION JOINT FORGE (Bosnia-Herzegovina), OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM (Afghanistan), and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM (Iraq). Lieutenant General Milley also deployed as part of the Multinational Force and Observers (Sinai, Egypt) and in support of OPERATION JUST CAUSE (Panama), OPERATION UPHOLD DEMOCRACY (Haiti), and deployment to Colombia and Somalia. Lieutenant General Milley’s education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Princeton University, a Master’s Degree in International Relations from Columbia University, and a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. He is also a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Seminar XXI.
